Edward S. Curtis chose a poignant first image for his masterwork The North American Indian. Curtis felt Plate 1, ‘The Vanishing Race,’ represented the plight of all the native nations, writing that ‘this picture is meant to convey… that the Indians as a race, already shorn of their tribal strength and stripped of their primitive dress, are passing into the darkness of an unknown future.’” —Paul Unks, Mountain Hawk Prints.
