Paul Kratter: California Landscapes

And introducing Christin Coy

Showing June 6 – July 11, 2009

Paul Kratter, Entangled Pines

Holton Studio Frame-Makers has been representing East Bay painter Paul Kratter for several years now, gathering an enthusiastic following for his scenes of the state, from the Sierras to the seashore. Mostly we've shown his plein air work, and primarily in canvas sizes of 11" x 14" or smaller. This show features more finished studio paintings, executed from plein air studies, and in larger sizes—mostly 16" x 20". The images range from Yosemite and the High Sierra (including what Paul calls his "home run painting" from last summer's annual week-long artists' pack trip!) to the Monterey Coast (see the dramatic "Entangled Pines," above). Paul has been very active this spring, showing at the Sonoma Plein Air Show, the Carmel Art Festival (where he earned third prize), and last week's Los Gatos Plein Air Art Show, where his work sold out. Paul has also been honored to have one of his Mount Diablo paintings included in the current show, Sacred Mountain: Images of Mount Diablo and Mount Fuji at Hearst Art Gallery, St Mary's College, Moraga. Christin Coy, though new to the Gallery, is a well-known favorite in the local plein air scene—and is winning attention nationally: she will be featured in the "Three to Watch" section of the September-October 2009 issue of Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine. Christin expertly captures the distinctive, beckoning forms and light of northern California in an especially harmonious and accomplished palette, as in "Morning Light" (10" x 20"), below:
